My review and thoughts on This Book is Too Quiet! You Add the Noise…

This is a fun and different picture book which will encourage kids to have a lot of fun. There are lots of different sounds in the world, and different noises to hear, but the pages in this book require the reader to make the sounds in order for them to come alive. Every page is about something noisy, but can you make the noises of the different things your see? This hardback is filled with thick matt pages of some brilliant illustrations and text.

There is a small introduction on the first pages and then each double page in this book is about something happening, like a rainy day, fireworks in the sky, a cloud making machine, etc., and children are invited to make the noises of the various things that are happening on the page. There are few words on the pages of the book, apart from the introduction, as each double page shows a different scene and asks kids to make the sounds. A scene showing a rainy day for example asks kids to follow from left to right the different aspects of the day and make sounds such as the plip and plop of rain falling, or the wooshing noise of the wind. I love how this book enourages kids to make noises, helping even the shyest of kids to explore the fun of inventing sounds for each page.

At first the sounds expected to be made are given to you with words like ‘Plop, plip’ and the ‘ffffff’ of the wind being spelled out on the page, albeit in a fun way with the letters sideways, getting bigger or smaller, etc. However as the book progresses you are then given symbols for the sounds to make or even just asked to think what sound would acompany an alien encounter or door opening and closing, etc. At each stage kids are invited to make up the sounds and there are no right or wrong ways to do this, all you have to do is get interactive and enjoy making up lots of different noises for the images on the page.

Every double page has some fun and interesting illustrations. I love the details in these pictures and how unique so many of them look. There’s something so fun about the way people, animals and objects look on each page, the various shapes and fun ways they are shown making creating sounds more fun, and there’s lots of details to spot in each picture, like all the things to see in the kitchen. There’s a lot of different scenes for kids to create sounds for and I like one of the later pages that invites kids to repeat a favourite tune doing it each time in a different way, like a robotic voice or miming it.

Overall this is a very fun and different book which is great for getting kids involved with reading a book and having some fun creating the different noises for all the scenes in the book. There’s no right or wrong way to make the noises, and I’m sure many kids and adults will enjoy having a bit of silly fun as you explore the different sounds you can make while also enjoying the fun pictures on every page. A unique and fun book which can be enjoyed again and again.
